To be fair, this sounds obvious when written out. But I can't tell you how many calls I've taken where someone says, “My water is hard, so I need an RO system.” No—you need a softener. Or the opposite: “The water tastes funny, so I want a whole-house filter.” That might help with chlorine, but it won't fix the taste issues caused by TDS (total dissolved solids). That requires RO.
Contaminant Coverage: What Each Actually Removes
This is where the gap widens—and where many people overbuy.
Standard Culligan water softeners remove hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) and, depending on the model, a bit of iron and manganese. That is their job. They don't remove chlorine, lead, pesticides, or bacteria. If you have a municipal water supply with chlorine, you can add a carbon filter upfront. But the softener itself isn't built for broad-spectrum contaminant removal.

Consider both if:
- You have hard water AND want purified drinking water
- You have high TDS (>500 ppm) and hard water (>7 gpg)
- You have a known contaminant (lead, arsenic) plus hard water
- You are on a well with multiple issues (hardness + bacteria + nitrates)
A client called in March 2024 needing a system for a new home under construction. Normal turnaround for a custom installation is two weeks. We rushed the softener install in three days for a family moving in the following week. We paid $200 extra in rush fees (on top of the $2,500 base cost), and delivered a working system with an RO pre-plumbed for future install. The client's alternative was drinking hard water with potential lead exposure for six months until they could schedule a separate visit. That wasn't acceptable.
